How to Build an Illegal Convertible (And Get Away With It)

I’d always looked longingly at those who lived on farms growing up - those who could hoon around with bikes, quads, and cars, getting up to all manner of hijinx.

One thing that had always appealed to me most was cutting the roof off a car to build a hacky convertible. It seemed so impossible, however - remove the top of your econobox with a reciprocating saw, and you’ll likely be pulled over, if not arrested, before getting out of the suburbs.

I decided to see if it was possible to build a hacked-up drop top in such a way that you could conceivably build it in your garage, and then drive it out to the wilderness in stealth mode, before removing the top and engaging in some no-holds-barred hoonery.

This is that story.

I did it on a Cherokee. It was quite fun. Mine only lasted a few months from September to December as it got cold and although driving in the snow was fun, I was still cold.

Enter the $800 Chevy metro for the next 9 1/2 years of my life.

I don’t think I’ll do it again, so I’m glad I did it.

That sounds awesome. I only got to ride this pony for a day. Built for a good time, not a long time. ;)

Good vid, awesome plan. Loved it.

What happens to the car now!?

If I come to SA, can I drive it? ;)

I’m glad you liked it!

Funnily enough, this was actually filmed up in WA - the car was driven over years ago from SA by some backpackers and used as a farm car for a good long while.

As you may have noticed, we shot the final scenes at night - a necessity as the car was headed for the crusher the next day. So unfortunately, it’s no longer available for joy rides.

That said, I highly recommend building your own - and don’t cut yourself. Those panels get real sharp, real quick!

If I ever live in the country and have the room, I promise I’ll give it a shot.
